DTG vs Screen Printing- Which method is right for me?
Direct-To-Garment, or DTG printing, is a relatively new development in garment decoration. Unlike Screen or Process Printing, which uses mesh like screens to transfer images to fabric, DTG uses a Piezo type ink-jet print head, similar to those used in your desktop printer at home, to print high resolution images directly onto fabric. The obvious and significant advantage to this printing method is two-fold- One, is that allows for HIGHLY detailed images to be printed, which are simply not attainable through traditional printing methods. The second, is that without the need to for screens, it makes it feasible to print even a single garment, whereas with Screen or Process Printing, due to the cost of producing and setting up the necessary screens, economies of scale dictate that a significant number of garments be produced in a single run in order to make this method cost effective, on a per-shirt basis.
On the flip side, when only a simple image or logo is desired for printing, especially in large quantities, Screen Printing is a MUCH more sensible option for production. The advantage to Screen Printing for simpler images, is the sheer efficiency in which they can be reproduced. In this instance, it is also much more cost effective than DTG printing. When deciding which images and artwork you want to have transferred to garments, it is very important to consider and weigh out the pro's and con's to each method, particularly where budget is concerned.
For example, if you are looking for 100+ shirts and you need them quickly, it would be best to select images that are suitable for Screen Printing, as it will be a much quicker turnaround, and considerably less expensive than 100+ shirts which are produced using the DTG method. Having said that, and particularly for bands, where the competition for marketable merch is high, DTG allows you to produce T-shirts with images that not only stand out against the crowd, but will also justify a slightly premium retail price offering! Offering artwork and merchandise items of this calibre can really help your band and your *brand* stand out! This is something to consider.
If, however, you are looking for a smaller run of garments, right down to a single item, DTG is the way to go. With no setup or screen fees, it can be way more cost effective than Screen Printing, and even moreso than Process Printing. This method is ideal for personalized items such as printed photographs, or special events like anniversaries, baby showers, bridal showers, vacation memories, etc.!
